Pongal is celebrated as Sankranthi in northern parts of India.
Bhogi, Pongal, Maatu Pongal & Kaanum Pongal are the four days of Pongal festival.
Bhogi : The celebrations start on the last day of Margazhi, which is known as "Bhogi". On this day, people get up very early in the morning to take head bath. Then according to ritual tradition, all the trash is placed in front of the house and inflamed. Old and useless things are displaced and replaced with new ones. Colorful rangoli is drawn in front of the house to welcome gods. Bhogi is the first day of Pongal and is celebrated in honor of Lord Indra, "The God of Clouds and Rains". Lord Indra is worshiped for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Thus, this day is also known as Indran.
Surya Pongal : The second day of Pongal is known as 'Surya Pongal' and is dedicated to the Sun God. It is the day on which the celebration actually begins and is also the first day of the Tamil month Thai. On this day Reaping of paddy is done. Using the new rice, the recipe "pongal" is made and offered to Sun God. The sun God moves in chariot driven by seven horses. A picture of the chariot is drawn in an open space when the sun arrives. A small sun is drawn at the centre of the chariot. Once the pooja is over, everyone in the house takes a small amount of Pongal and sprinkles all over the house, saying "Pongalo Pongal". This is done as a prayer to God to bless their houses.
Maatu Pongal : Third day of the Pongal festival is the Maatu Pongal, on this day cows are worshipped. Milk suppliers decorate their cows on this day, paint horns of cows and tie clothes on cows. Then cows are taken to all houses around.
Kaanum Pongal : The fourth day of the three-day Pongal celebrations is called Kaanum Pongal. In few places this day is also known as Karinaal or Thiruvalluvar Day. It is dedicated to the sun god, Surya and has its roots in ancient Brahminical tradition.
